How To Determine If The Welding Process Of A Welded Turning Tool Is Firm?

To determine whether the welding process of a brazed turning tool is strong, there's no need for complex equipment. It can be easily identified from three dimensions: **visual inspection, simple testing, and practical operation verification**. The method is practical and easy to operate:

1. First, check the appearance: inspect for weld defects
Visually examine the welding joint between the cutter head and the cutter body. A high-quality weld will be **smooth and flat**, without obvious cracks, pores, slag inclusions, or gaps; the cutter head and the cutter body fit tightly together without gaps or warping. If the weld has blackening, peeling, or unevenness, it is likely that the welding is not firm, and the cutter is prone to falling off during cutting.

2. Simple Tests
Low-cost method to distinguish between solid and defective welds: Tap Test - Gently tap the body of the tool (avoiding the cutting edge) with a small hammer and judge by the sound. If it makes a clear metallic sound, it indicates a tight weld; if the sound is dull or muffled, there may be a cold weld or incomplete penetration.
Bending Test - Gently try to bend the cutting head with your hand or pliers to check for looseness. A strong weld will not show any movement; if slight shaking is felt, reject it immediately, as such a turning tool is prone to chipping or falling off during machining.

3. Practical verification: The true test lies in actual machining trials
This is the most reliable method. Mount the turning tool on the lathe, and cut common materials such as carbon steel and cast iron using conventional parameters. Observe the cutting process:
A solid weld will not cause tool tip vibration or abnormal noise;
After 10-20 minutes of continuous cutting, stop the machine for inspection. If there is no cracking or deformation at the weld joint, and the tool tip position has not shifted, it indicates that the welding process is up to standard.
